Cowgirls Finish Runner-Up at 4A State Golf Tournament

The Goodland Cowgirls finished runner-up at the 4A State Golf Tournament in Pittsburg at Crestview Country Club on Monday, October 21st. Goodland posted a team score of 388 to finish 14 shots back of state champion Topeka Hayden, who posted a 374 team score. German foreign exchange student Paulina Wagner shot the low score for Goodland with a 91 to place 11th overall. Katie Hays, who won two tournaments this season, shot a 96 to place 17th. Katie Hays also placed in the top 25 with a 99. The 2nd place finish caps off a season that saw the Cowgirls win seven tournaments as a team and capture a second consecutive GWAC league championship.

Coach Livengood, “The course was a type of course in which you had to be able to place the ball and there were quite a few bunkers, but the course was also a forgiving course. I was pleased to see the girls go through a learning experience as well as a positive experience. I forget sometimes that we are basically a young team with some experience at the state tournament. The girls did a great job taking notes and trying to place the ball where we had talked about. That is a positive thing to watch as a coach, as the girls did listen to the advice and tried to do what was asked of them. I think they are a great team and they had a great season.”

Cowboys Win District Opener at Clay Center

(4-3) Goodland 8, (4-3) Clay Center 7

Goodland opened district play with an 8-7 win on the road at Clay Center Friday night. The 15 combined points matched the lowest total score in the Goodland/Clay Center series history, the first meeting in 1991 combined for the same final score with Goodland winning 8-7 in that matchup as well. Clay Center led 7-0 after the 1st quarter but Goodland responded with a 1-yard touchdown run by Garrett Taylor with just 1:34 remaining in the 2nd quarter to give them the lead after Taylor added the two-point conversion. The touchdown drive was set up by the first career interception by John Peden. The win snapped a 3-game losing skid for Goodland and puts them in the drivers seat of the district with a home contest with Concordia on October 25th. A Goodland victory and a Clay Center win over Colby would clinch a playoff berth for Goodland.
